The Pine City Basketball Player
A Pine City basketball player is a woman with pride in herself as a student, an athlete, and a member of the community. She, as a member of the basketball program, not only represents herself and her family, but also her fellow teammates, coaches and Pine City. As our program grows and prospers, she will constantly be in the eye of her fellow students and the general public. She shall be a leader and conduct herself in such a manner as to be praised, not only as a basketball player, but more importantly as a woman.
A Pine City basketball player has goals for herself as a student, player and a woman. To attain those goals she bases her life-style on hard work, 100% effort, sacrifice, second effort, determination, desire, dedication, punctuality, and persistance. Just as these ideals will bring championships on the court they will also reap reward in the classroom and earn her greater respect as an individual.
A Pine City basketball player always has her head up; she looks her fellow man and the world in the eye. She is a class woman in a class program. A Pine City basketball player always has her priorities in the proper order: family and faith first, school and studies second, and basketball third.

Goal: To help you become the best citizen/student/player you can be
Role of the Athlete
- Must be willing to make sacrifices:
- Time spent at practice (after school and at home: in season and out of season)
- Obey the state high school league rules, school rules and rules set by coach.
- Recognize the fact that because you are a basketball player, you are better known than other students, and because you are on display at all times, your conduct will be praised or criticized sooner than other students both on and off the court.
- As a basketball player you will at times be confronted with problems and should feel free to go to the coach and discuss them with him or her. Be open with the coaches.
- It is the responsibility of the player to accept the decisions of the coach as to what her role will be as a participant. If you need an explanation, talk to the coaches.
Role of the Coaches
- The coaches are to teach the players not only the fundamental skills of basketball, but also the rules of the game, to play fairly, to be responsible to their teammates, and to understand the importance of conditioning and training.
- The coaches are to encourage high moral standards and self-discipline
- The coaches are to prepare their players by encouraging, praising, and giving constructive criticism to each individual as necessary.

2. Missing Practice
Players must be at all practices. You must contact Coach Hasz BEFORE practice starts that day if you are not going to be there. If your coach is not contacted, it will be considered an unexcused absence and the player will then miss a minimum of 1 half of play for the first offense, a minimum of 1 game for the second offense, and dismissal for the 3rd offense.
Consequences for excused absences will be evaluated on case by case basis.
Competitors
Think about who you consider to be great competitors. What qualities do they have? I think of athletes who are relentless regardless of the score. I think about the players who exert all of their energy toward their one goal, which is to not only win, but to see how they stack up against the best. Competitors are those that refuse to lose and do whatever it takes for as long is it takes to make sure that they themselves and their teammates are prepared to beat the best teams in the state.
One of the biggest reasons for the success of the college program that I was part of (17 consecutive conference championships etc) is the competitive nature of the coaching staff and the leaders on the team. After I had been at school for one practice I knew that the coaches and players on the team were people who I would want on my side when going to war. There is no time to feel sorry for yourself when you are a competitor. Feeling sorry for yourself means that you are not competing in a manner which will allow you to play at a championship level.
Starting today, being a Dragon basketball player means that you are willing and able to prepare yourself to play and compete at a championship level. We are looking for athletes who we can take to war with us, players who have no fear on the court and show it by their aggressive practice and game time mentalities in which they are relentless and intelligent.
We are looking for competitors!
Believe and Then See
I am convinced that before you can see results, you must first believe!
This is an edited version of an assignment that I did for my Hall of Fame coach Scott Berry at Mayville State University, made to fit our situation here in Pine City.
I dream about a winning tradition. I dream about the Pine City Dragon basketball team being the team to beat with the other teams having to play their best game of the season just to have a chance to beat us. I dream about a team that rallies around one another in which their fundamental skills and mentality compliment each other to no end. I dream about a team that does not have any stars, just one single unit with a common goal. I dream about commitment and hard work, because without it any other dream is not possible. I dream about a team that does not get down on one another but picks each other up in times of need. I dream about a team that is rock solid, one that cannot be rattled, and one that the other team never feels they get the best of no matter what the score. I dream about a team that is relentless and fearless, willing to take on any team at any time. I dream about a team that is ready to dominate. I dream about playing the best teams in the state and when we have them on the ropes, we become even more fearless and more aggressive. I dream about a team that goes into the playoffs with a chip on its shoulders, ready to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to win the subsection, section, and state championships. I dream about a team that has no doubts about their ability to dominate any team at the high school level. I dream about a celebration on the court when the buzzer sounds and we win the state championship. I dream about a team that believes that all of these dreams are possible through hard work and daily improvement.
WE MUST FIRST BELIEVE AND THEN WE WILL SEE

10 Characteristics of a High Character Player
Provided by: Basketball HQ
High character players are a must for any team that has championship goals. It takes players that are willing to step up and lead and get everyone moving towards one common purpose. Players like this are invaluable to a team. Here are ten characteristics of a high character player.
No Plays Off
The temptation for players is to take possessions off when they are tired or mentally fatigued. This usually happens on the defensive end of the court. High character players stay mentally engaged when they are on the court, and they recognize that they have a responsibility to the team to be locked in on every play.
Maximum Effort
There are always going to be players that are more naturally gifted and faster than others. They can finish in the top 3 on every sprint without having to output maximum effort. A high character player recognizes that they are competing against themselves to run as fast as they can. They try to win every sprint and run as fast as they can each time.
Competes in Every Drill
There are always going to be certain basketball drills that players like more than others. The tendency with this is to give less effort on the drills that aren't as fun or as enjoyable. This is not how high character players approach drills though.
Instead they have already made a commitment to compete and give their best effort in every drill that they do because they want to improve individually and also help the team get better.
Leads by Example
We have all heard the phrase, "talk is cheap." This is especially true when it comes to leadership. Anyone can talk about doing the right things, but it takes a special player to stay committed to doing it the right way day in and day out, regardless of how they are feeling on a certain day. High character players lead with their actions on a daily basis.
Holds Teammates Accountable
Great teams are players led, and that means that the leaders of a team need to make sure that they are holding their teammates accountable. If a teammate is acting in a way that hinders the team's success, there needs to be leaders on the team to step up and say something.
High character players are able to lead their teammates because they have already been modeling the team first attitude. They don't allow anything or anyone to take away from the team's success.
Celebrates Other's Success
Whether your role is leading scorer or 12th man on the team, it is important that high character players celebrate another teammate's success and the success of the team. This doesn't mean that you don't work hard for a bigger role on the team, but there is no place for talking bad about teammates or complaining about minutes.
First In and Last Out
This goes back to leading with actions and not just words. Players know who is in the gym working hard, and if you want to challenge your teammates to work harder, you need to be the hardest worker on the team. Show up early before practice to work hard and then stay late to work even more; players respect this.
Does the Right thing when No One is Watching
It is easy to do the right thing when you know a coach is watching, but when character is really revealed is when no one is watching. Do you touch every line even when the coaches aren't watching? Do you complete every rep?
This may seem like a trivial thing, but it adds up and becomes something bigger if you allow yourself to cut corners. High character players hold themselves accountable and do it the right way because it is the right thing to do.
Invested in Teammates
Getting in the gym and working on your individual skill development is great. However, the next step and a sign of a high character player is bringing teammates with you when you go to the gym.
High character players are invested in their teammates and they understand that they can't do it all on their own. They recognize that it takes a great team to win games and ultimately championships.
Communicates at a High Level
Basketball is a game of communication. Whether you are on the defensive end of the court, on the bench, or on offense, you should always be communicating. Communication saves breakdowns and helps the team's overall success.
As a high character player you want to be the best communicator on your team. Communication is contagious, and before you know it the whole team will follow your lead and begin to communicate on a high level.
